About Smith Creek Suzuki ViolinWhat makes Smith Creek Suzuki Violin so unique?
Our students attend a private lesson each week and a group lesson every week with other children of a similar age and level of experience. Our emphasis on group lessons truly provides the education that children want and need. So often, young music students burn out because of lack of interest or lack of motivation. Group lessons nip that in the bud! The kids want to be with their friends, and playing the violin provides an opportunity for creativity, growth, hard work, discipline, and...fun with friends! Private lessons allow the personalized, one-on-one attention essential to the development of strong technique and musicality while group lessons are a great format for learning music history and theory, improvisation, composition, and teamwork. It's a win-win. |

I began playing six years old and studied under several teachers here in Utah including Wendy Flanders, Karen Child, and Leonard Braus. I chose to study music at the collegiate level at an elite music school, The Jacobs School of Music in Indiana. I graduated in 2010 with my Bachelor's of Music (Violin performance) from Indiana University. It was there I discovered my passion for teaching. Working under great teachers, Mimi Zweig and Brenda Brenner, I assisted young children in their musical pursuits. It was a perfect fit. While I was there, I observed how much fun and how effective weekly group lessons are for the encouraging and motivating young musicians. After finishing my Bachelor's, I returned to Utah to marry my high-school sweetheart, and complete my Master's in Music (Violin Performance) at the University of Utah. While there, I was awarded a position in the Graduate String Quartet and began the Davis County Suzuki Violin School. After I graduated in 2012, I threw myself into my teaching even more, and have had the privilege of working with wonderful students and parents. I am a registered Suzuki teacher, and continue my training every year so that I am constantly improving my ability to help and connect with each child in my studio. I have three children, and a few years ago became a trained Suzuki Early Childhood Education teacher. McKenzie Clawson
I began playing the violin at age five with Wendy Flanders and later Karen Child. Although I loved the violin and played with several different orchestras, I never considered the violin as a career. I was a mechanical engineering major at Utah State University, when I realized if I missed playing my violin so much, I should probably just do it full time. I auditioned for the music program and was accepted as a performance major. I have never lost my love for math and science, and have found it a great way to connect to my students. There are a lot of young violinists who love science, and I love teaching them about the science of music.
I enjoyed my performance studies at Utah State with Rebecca McFaul and the Fry Street Quartet during the school year, and my pedagogy studies with Cathy Lee and Allen Lieb during the summers. As I studied, I became passionate about using the violin as a teaching tool to promote a healthy mind and a healthy body. I was able to stay in Logan after graduation, teaching violin and performing with the American Festival Orchestra and Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theater. I then moved to Mesa, AZ with my family. In Arizona I kept teaching, and performed and recorded an album with the Logan Quintet. My husband, my two children and I just moved back to Utah and we are so excited to be closer to family Would you like more information? Or a free trial lesson? Click below to get started. |
